About Astradot:
We're on a mission to create the best product in the world for engineers to understand and debug their applications and infrastructure. To create this new Observability solution, we are fundamentally advancing how observability data is collected, stored and queried. We're an early-stage, 100% remote startup backed by leading investors in Silicon Valley (early investors in AirBnB, HashiCorp, Peloton, Square, Slack, TikTok, Zendesk, etc.).
The team:
Astradot's Distributed Systems team builds and runs the intake, storage and query engines and internally-developed databases for every dashboard and alert for Astradot's customers. These high-performance services running on AWS process time series and tracing data and metadata. We are hiring the founding engineering team and our distributed systems are at the core of what we do and what sets us apart from the competition.
The opportunity:
We are looking for Founding Engineers to expand and build out core databases for metrics and tracing data. You may be developing a complex database feature, evolving our novel storage layer or creating next generation query language and engine. You'll need to be comfortable at many levels of abstraction, like code, customers, people and systems design. You will be working at all layers of the databases from the high level analytics algorithms to the low level distributed computation and storage layer.
You will:
- Write a significant amount of code for new and existing databases and related systems
- Scale and own these backend systems and databases
- Ship high quality code and architecture
- Mentor engineers on the team, developing their skills and helping advance their careers
- Work with the founders to flesh out the future of the product
- Help shape the future of our engineering organization
Requirements
- A passion for working on deeply technical projects and wanting to work on distributed systems, concurrency amp; parallelism, replication protocols, file systems amp; correctness
- You have been building applications for 5+ years with C/C++ or Rust and have significant backend, database or systems-level programming experience
- You have a BS/MS/PhD in a scientific field or equivalent experience
- You want to work in a fast-paced, high-growth startup environment that respects its engineers and customers
- You are comfortable working with a 100% distributed engineering team, collaborating on GitHub, Slack, Zoom, etc. in the open and as a self starter
Bonus points:
- Experience working on databases or other storage systems internals
- Experience with Apache Arrow, Apache Parquet
- Know how columnar databases work
- Know how to convert an algorithm to use SIMD instructions
- Good knowledge of Linux internals
- You’ve contributed to open-source libraries and actively participate in the development community (blogging, giving talks, meetups, tweeting, etc.)
