The Role:
Rystad Energy is seeking anambitious and motivated candidate with a strong academic record of accomplishment, an analytical mindset, good communication and research skills, and a good understanding of coal markets and coal utilization.
The Coal Analyst will be a member of the small, dedicated coal markets team (sitting within the larger Power Team) and is responsible for maintaining and developing our coal database and carrying out varying analysis within the sector. The work consists of collecting, modelling, and analyzing coal related data and presenting it to clients (both internal and external).
The work will give you a deep understanding of the long-term outlook for coal demand and supply and how fast it will be substituted for by other energy sources including renewable energy (such as solar, wind, hydro) and traditional sources of electricity (such as gas amp; nuclear), along with storage and hydrogen. You will work in close collaboration with the power team and our consultants and business developers in different offices around the world.
Key responsibilities / tasks:
· Analyze international and country level coal markets to understand supply amp; demand and price movements for both thermal and metallurgical coal.
· Gather country and asset level coal related data where appropriate to populate our in-house data base. Data includes: coal production, exports, imports and consumption volumes of the various types of coal
· Research and analyze coals’ role in the energy transition plans for individual countries and understand what it means for future thermal and metallurgical coal demand
· Create algorithms to crawl coal data from official sources
· Be able to verify and competently determine the most trustworthy data where conflicting values are available
· Maintain and update the database with the most up to date information
· Take ownership of delivering reports and commentaries on topical events and conduct presentation with clients
· Build and maintain a strong network of industry contacts
· Become an expert in the coal sector
· Work as part of Rystad Energy’s global energy research team and interact particularly closely with the wider power team, gas markets team and global energy systems teams
· Support our clients and business development team
Requirements
· 2-5 years’ experience of working knowledge in the coal sector, through direct experience in either research, commercial or industry roles
· University degree in a data driven, energy related or scientific field such as engineering, economics, energy, mathematics, geology or mining (Distinction or above preferable)
· Strong data analyst skills and excellent skills in Microsoft Excel are essential, additional data analyst tools and competence preferable
· Solid research, analytical and problem-solving skills
· Understanding of coal markets and coal pricing mechanisms
· Ability to communicate and present well both verbally and written
· Self-motivated as well as a strong team player
