Part of this mission is achieved through partnering with global clients, such as Microsoft, Red Hat, and Oracle, and working with them to supply bespoke and licensed content that helps achieve their product marketing goals. This content might be full e-books, short e-books, infographics, surveys, and other products. This is a successful part of the Packt business that we are looking to expand through proactively driving new product ideas to clients.

Overview

The Lead Designer is a valuable member of the PCC design team. They report to the Design Manager and the Business Unit (BU) Head. The Lead Designer directly manages the PDs (Presentation Designers) in the PCC team, making sure that every piece of content is produced to the utmost quality to meet client expectations.

The Lead Designer creates and oversees the production of pieces, such as e-books, infographics, white papers, catalogs, book covers, and layouts for short-form, long-form, and full-print titles. They create new templates and designs for any new products developed in PCC, including new ideas such as landing pages and other non-book products.

They have in-depth knowledge of book layout and design and strong graphic design skills. They have experience working on brand guidelines and design briefs for clients and internal work, with an understanding of styles, grids, and layout techniques. They also have experience taking projects from conception to production and are comfortable discussing requirements with clients.

They must be well-versed with different clients' Brand and Style Guidelines, such as Microsoft, Red Hat, and Elastic. The Lead designer also provides support and training to the rest of the design team on the client brand guidelines.

They ensure high quality and consistency across all published pieces and adhere to required deadlines.

Packt Client Content (PCC) creates learning products and books for tech companies to meet their marketing and knowledge goals. Our clients include Microsoft, Red Hat, Oracle, Elastic Search, etc. We create customized products for clients and customers. Clients use PCC products primarily for lead generation and customer acquisition. Our products include e-books, customized or bespoke content, mini-eBooks, whitepapers, blogs, infographics, short guides, etc. We also grant licensing and translation rights for Packt Books. Tech companies prefer PCC’s up-to-date content to stay competitive and relevant in a fast-changing landscape.

Responsibilities

  • Attend team calls and report monthly progress
  • Keep design moving forward in terms of layouts and proactive revisions
  • Oversee the assigned design projects, from conception to delivery
  • Design original pieces, including covers, infographics and illustrations
  • Review other designers’ work to ensure high quality and train junior designers
  • Maintain client and internal brand consistency throughout all projects
  • Work closely with the design team and liaise with editorial and project management teams to ensure deadlines are met
  • Designing templates for the different product types
  • Create Vendor Catalogue design
  • Understanding of all aspects of production, such as accessibility, creation of final packages, font management, etc.
  • Training and mentoring of the PDs

Relationship Management

  • Work closely and collaboratively with all the internal stakeholders, such as the editorial, business, operations, and other teams.
  • Manage relationships with editors, CPMs, copyrighters, project managers, etc., working on the projects.
  • Attend client calls when necessary on design discussions

Competencies 

  • At least 8-10 years experience as a Senior Designer, Book Layout Designer, or similar role
  • Portfolio of completed design projects, including client work to brand guidelines
  • Highly proficient in design software (e.g., InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop), Microsoft Word, PPT, and Acrobat’s proofing and accessibility tools.
