Job Description

Job summary:

The Publishing amp; Video Distribution Manager (PVDM) will be managing a team consisting of distribution executives (DEs). The PVDM will primarily be responsible for managing all aspects of digital content operations. They need to ensure timely distribution of Packt’s digital content to various third-party channels with the expected quality.

Prior experience of management isn’t required. The PVDM role requires a considerable amount of cooperation and coordination with the various content teams in the company and also our content partners. Maintaining good communication and productive cooperation with them is critical to the success of the PVDM role.

The PVDM is a first level line manager role that reports to a Content Distribution Partner in Operations.

Key responsibilities:

Digital Content Operations

  • Prioritize and supervise the updating amp; management of content in various file formats as per the established guidelines and delivery dates.
  • Ensure that quality checks are in place and the digital content (files) is fully functional with no errors before distribution.
  • Ensure timely delivery of digital content to various third-party vendors as per the signed agreement and established processes /protocols.
  • Maintain excellent relationship with all third-party vendors.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify content delivery by suggesting improvements in processes and recommending relevant tools for automation.
  • Participate and contribute to discussions on Product (e.g. book/video) management in discussion amp; department meetings.
  • Ensure that guidelines for all work processes are documented and updated effectively when changes in processes are introduced.
  • Make day to day decisions on all aspects of digital content operations and, if required, seek feedback from the line manager relating to the decision.

People Management

  • Identify hiring requirements ahead of time, allowing sufficient training time for new recruits, to meet projected title output.
  • Collaborate with the Pamp;C department to take decisions on recruitment and interview potential candidates.
  • Take ownership of the job specification and job levels of the DE role.
  • Ensure that the DEs are well-trained and update their knowledge and skills as changes are introduced in the team.
  • Manage the performance of the DEs on a daily basis to ensure smooth progress of work, established processes are followed, and meet the targets.
  • Ensure executives follow company rules and policies. It is also expected that you follow those policies and demonstrate the appropriate behaviors.
  • Conduct performance reviews of team members to discuss KVMs and competencies and establish career development goals.
  • Delegate to staff appropriate responsibilities that would help them develop and improve their skills.
  • Manage the contribution of staff of ideas that get incorporated by the Production teams into their workflow.

Reporting:

The PVDM is expected to produce the following reports:

  • Operational Performance: These reports discuss actual execution results against targets, highlighting any problems and identifying remedial actions. These reports and scorecards should be produced daily, monthly, quarterly, and annually.
  • Staff: These reports summarizes the performance of each member of staff and what plans and actions are in place to deal with any development needs and to ensure that DEs grow in their roles. These reports should be produced monthly, quarterly, and annually.
  • Miscellaneous: When and if needed, the PVDM may be asked to produce distribution-specific reports.
